This project raises awareness to how women feel limited in what they can wear in NYC because of trying to avoid sexual harassment. New York is supposed to be the place with unique fashion styles, however it's difficult to live up to that expectation as a woman with the fear of being catcalled and followed by men at night.
I made a short black mesh dress to represent the concept of having a "Little Black Dress" as a staple nightlife item. I then collected red fabric scraps and used water soluble fabric to create a new material. The purpose of using scraps was to speak on the shaming of women wearing clothing with minimal coverage. The leather dress with the black chains and lock resembles a cage to emphasize how trapped women feel when wanting to express themselves through fashion but also don't want to jeopardize their safety. I 3D printed the lock with a mini cage and the word "LIMIT" engraved on it.
I did a research study which explored the statistics of reports of assault and harassment, laws that are in place for self defense, and I learned about the personal experiences of some women living in NYC.
